One of the things that I always wanted to do was to learn how to touch type. My goal wasn’t getting super fast at typing, just capable.

By now, I don’t even remember how long it took nor the exact process I did, but now I can do it. Yeah, I’m not perfect at it; I make mistakes all the time. But I’m also decent at quickly correcting, either by the classic backspace or just Control + backspace to delete the whole word if I made the mistake too far back (more than three or four letters from where my cursor currently is).

I was having issues running the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility in my Windows 11 System. It installed fine but when trying to launch it I got a message saying that it was unable to run because there was another application or process monitoring the CPU. After several tries across different days I decided to dig deeper using Perplexity.ai

I didn’t get an immediate solution but after the first inquiry I got clues of what was wrong so I’m writing this guide to help other users that may be running into the same issue under similar system conditions.

Companies are constantly complaining about the lack of skilled labor, the problem is that the labor they require is focused in a very narrow set of tools that they use internally.

Deciding what to learn or what to teach with this consideration becomes basically impossible. It’s very rare that you would find identical toolsets in tech jobs since most of the tools are proprietary and for internal use only.

I like playing with new technologies, so of course I have tried some AI models and tools and so far, most of them are barely useful as inspiration prompts, thumbnail generators, translating text or organizing bit chunks of information in a specific manner. But it does hallucinate A LOT. It is more unreliable than reliable. So there you go. Yay! AI is totally not bullshit… right? RIGHT?

Finally, I’ve had enough and decided to get rid of Git, GitHub, and continuous integration to manually upload this site, generating the build from my local machines. When you learn to use Hugo, everywhere you look, you’re shown how to do a deployment with GitHub, but I think all of that is too much for the needs of most people and ends up increasing the technical debt that you constantly have to carry when maintaining the site.

My most recent hobby project has been installing Ubuntu 23.04 to my Macbook Pro from late 2011 which I use just as a side device. It’s been using Pop!_OS that honestly had been working great but I wanted to upgrade the SSD for a faster and bigger one.

I popped in a Samsung 850 Evo in there with around 500 GB. but I kept the previous ssd inside in a sata2 port as a backup system. The bootloader in that system broke when I re-installed Grub on Ubuntu but it seems it’s fixable.

After so many months using Hugo I got to say, I love it, it’s been fun and I have learned a lot BUT… yes. BUT. It’s not as easy to use as it was “promised” or at least how easy I thought it was gonna be. Themes are just OK, most of them are very basic and with incomplete or broken features. A big chunk of them are ports from basic themes from other site builders. Everything has had to be tweaked and customized in most themes I’ve used so far so that they function semi decently but I’m still far from being an expert in web dev and HUGO to really feel as free as I want to. I wish more dedicated designers and developers joined the community so we could get a “just blog and it does most for you” experience.

Every couple of months I get this impulse and desire to add ActivityPub functionality to at least this microblog but every time I start researching on the appropriate procedures I just get a headache because of how complicated it gets to do it on a “serverless” static website. I wish someone finds a way to make this more accesible. I love some of the sites I’ve seen that have it enabled and the promise of updating the site with an app like Indigenous sounds really attractive. For now I have the notion that a lot of ActivityPub functionalities are hostile to sites not running on a proper server. Change my mind.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the internet. I’ve spent most of my life in it but sometimes, almost always lately, I wish we would come back to the pre social networks era. These services are so frictionless that it makes most people say stupid shit and fight without any pre cognition of their permanently on the record declarations. The requirement of deploying your own website was a good entry barrier and we still had a lot of dumb, fun, crazy sites. It just wasn’t a privilege accessible to most.

One thing I’ve noticed along the years of learning & witnessing the development of web technologies is that their own creators barely use the things they build for the public knowing the monetization incentives they build into their platforms. Where’s @Jack pro-activity on Twitter? Where’s Mark constant engagement on Facebook? Why does Andy Rubin just left Android to Google’s oversight. They all seem to end up abandoning their creations when they become ad tracking networks with addictive features because most of the engagement turns out to come from outrage, cry-tizism and that ends the party for everyone. I wish that in the next decade web technologies turn into services of value instead of low quality engagement systems.

I’ve been trying out the “Fediverse” services and what most of them share as a common flaw is the lack of creativity in their platform freedoms.

They are just copies of their bigger non “free” services. The promise of freedom gets really limited by the same format of the last decade. There’s no incentive for people to use these open services and protocols because there aren’t offering anything different than that of those they are already running away from.
